Interdisciplinary Resources for Transfer Students | Transition Courses
African American Studies 39B: Introduction to the University
African American Studies 39B: Introduction to the University is a course designed by the late Professor VèVè Clark to assist in increasing the retention and graduation rates amongst Minority, Freshman/Sophomore, Student Athletes and Transfer Students. The course intends to motivate these student groups, assist them in practicing analytical skills and identifying support networks among faculty, staff and peers within the university and in the wider Bay Area community. Africam 39B offers practical approaches to increase students’ confidence, analytical and networking abilities. However, the course goes further, exposing students to their forerunners, alumni who have successfully navigated the campus.
The course develops critical inquiry, close reading of texts and effective writing techniques at the university level through the analysis of various themes to be announced in the Course Description within the Schedule of Classes. The course may be taken for a letter grade or P/NP. Check the Schedule of Classes under African American Studies for section days, time and location. You may sign up for the class online via Tele-Bears. If you have any questions please contact Quamè at quame@berkeley.edu or (510) 643-9269.
SLC | Other Voices
This program supports the efforts of all students who are considering or entering literary studies. In the Spring semester we sponsor, along with the English Department, the Other Voices Lecture Series and coordinate the Other Voices course.
Explore the diversity of voices in literature and other media through guest lectures and small discussion sections. In the process, develop and express your own voice, find out more about the experience of your classmates, and get to know the research and interests of a variety of professors and departments on campus.
